"BE PREPARED"

If you are in charge of the Life to Eagle transition in your unit, you have to Be Prepared to assist your Eagle Scout candidates with the documentation needed for their presentation of the Eagle Community Project to the District Eagle Board of Review for final approval and, later on, with their final presentation, in front of the Eagle Board of Review, to obtain their Eagle Scout rank.

Almost all of the Eagle Scout candidates go through this Life to Eagle process only once in their lifetime and, perhaps, also for the first time in their lives, these young men are confronted with this type of formalities. However, the Eagle Scout rank has nationally established rules and regulations with almost zero tolerance for individual adaptations. Furthermore, the Eagle Board of Review cannot make allowances or take short cuts based only on ignorance of the existing rules and regulations.

When you, or any other adult leaders in your unit, sign the approval for an Eagle Scout community project or, later on, sign the application for the Eagle Scout rank it is the logical interpretation of the Eagle Board of Review that the signing leaders have reviewed the documentation for adherence to the established guidelines and also for neatness, proper spelling, punctuation and construction. When you, or other adult leaders in your unit, present a candidate to the Eagle Board of Review for his rank approval, the Board is also assuming that you have ascertained yourself, prior to the meeting with the Eagle Board of Review, that the candidate will show up for the meeting not only on time, but also with the proper uniforms showing the correct rank and office patches, and with the proper amount of copies requested (original and three copies) for the Eagle Scout application, including the statement of ambitions and the properly presented Eagle Scout Community Project Workbook.

There is nothing more frustrating, for an Eagle Scout candidate, than to be told by the Eagle Board of Review that his documentation, uniform or patches are not in order, or that he is missing certain information, or signatures when the candidate has, with him, documents signed by his unit leadership, indicating their approval for accuracy and completeness.

All these inconveniences can be avoided, very easily, by obtaining the proper documentation from this web site. The leader in charge of advancement will find valuable resources such as the Eagle Project Workbook, in fillable PDF format, to assist the candidate in proper presentation. Also, the Eagle Project Checklist, used by the Eagle Board of Review for the approval of projects can be downloaded to make sure that all the planning areas have been covered before signing the project with the leader’s approval and, finally, under More Eagle Resources, also in the same page, the candidate and the leader will have a way of making sure that the final documentation is in order by checking it against the list of what constitutes the Eagle Packet. If these resources are not sufficient, members of the Eagle Board of Review are usually available for advice at the District Roundtables or by contacting the chairman.

By using the resources indicated above and below, you will not only give confidence to the Eagle Scout candidate but, more important, you will avoid errors and omissions that will, eventually, be caught by the Eagle Board of Review but, unfortunately, at the most inconvenient time for the candidate and the leader accompanying him.

Contribute in making the Life to Eagle process a pleasantly memorable one for the candidate and for yourself, familiarize yourself with the proper procedures for requesting records from the Council Registrar and Be Prepared
